About RGWF
Our Mission
Not only does the Royal Gorge RIO provide the perfect place to host the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, but it is also a tremendous asset to the community. Located in Centennial Park, the play waves provide focus point for river activities and a fun place to enjoy the Arkansas River.
Our History
EST. 2009
What started as a simple idea in 2001, a Build Your Own Boat Race to celebrate the Arkansas River, has grown into one of the region’s most beloved summer traditions. By 2009, that spark had turned into the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, brought to life by a coalition of local organizations united around a common goal: establishing a world-class whitewater park right in the heart of Cañon City.
Over the years, the festival has raised funds for the construction and continued expansion of the Whitewater Park, while also supporting Recreation District programs and charitable causes through the Fremont Community Foundation.
Today, the RGWF is a full weekend celebration of the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Region, and the community that makes it all possible. Most events are held at or near the pedestrian bridge by 4th Street, where you can watch the action unfold while grabbing food and drinks from local vendors along the Whitewater Park. From whitewater competitions and outdoor gear vendors to live entertainment and great food, including plenty of vegetarian options, there’s something for everyone.
Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, the events are designed to welcome all skill levels, and equipment is often provided. But fair warning, once you jump in, you might just make a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Who’s Runnin’ This Show?
Each year, the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is powered by three local Fremont County, Colorado organizations and a mighty, dedicated team of 300 volunteers covering land and water events.
